5 Tips for Traveling Solo

I’ve been traveling solo for the past few years, so I’ve learned a few things about how to save money, and stay safe while overseas. Here are my top 5 tips for traveling solo.

Traveling alone can be daunting and intimidating, but if you prepare properly and use common sense then you can have a great trip, in a new country and even make new friends.

My first solo trip was to Brazil. Everyone thought I was crazy and the scare-tactic stories were a bit much. But I understand where they were coming from. I’m a petite woman and being in a foreign country where English is not the native language could post a challenge. But I didn’t let that deter me and I’m happy that I took the plunge and made the trip.

I think going to a country where the people looked like me helped me to blend in with the locals. Most people assumed that I was Carioca (A Brazilian born in Rio) and would start talking to me in Portuguese. I learned a few Portuguese phrases and got compliments on my accent. Once I exhausted my list of phrases then I would confess that I didn’t know anymore haha. Everyone appreciated that I made the effort and would then speak in English (if they knew English).
