Why I Don’t Want to go Natural

So that’s my background with hair “politics.” In my family, it was never about trying to conform to the majority (Black people are the majority in Jamaica) or trying to be more Eurocentric. While I can not and do not speak for all Jamaicans, this is my truth.

That said, my reason for chemically straightening my hair is simple and frankly, vain – I look better with straight hair. I have a big head (not my forehead but the whole noggin), broad shoulders, and a skinny body. I’ve grown to love my body and I know exactly what works for my body type. Straight hair looks best on me because it helps to balance out my shoulders. If I went natural, I would constantly need to use heat to straighten my hair and that can be even more damaging than getting a relaxer.

Deciding to wear straight hair is akin to deciding to cut bangs if you have a large forehead. It’s a style preference based on what you think flatters you. Now I do have fun with wigs and wear curly wigs when I want to change my look. That’s the beauty of being a woman, we get to have fun with our hair, makeup and wardrobe.

Bottom line – I love my hair. It is beautiful, whether it is natural or straightened. I merely exercise my right to style it straight. (Side note – the pic above is my texlaxed hair)

Why did you go natural? Why haven’t you gone natural? I’m almost asking rhetorically because I believe you have the right to go natural or relax without having to justify your decisions to anyone. Regardless of your and my hair status, I’m here to help you achieve your hair goals.
