I received several emails requests for a video detailing what caused my hair setbacks. I’ll work on that video this weekend. In the meantime, here are the top 7 causes of hair setbacks.
7. Protein overload.
Many of us focus on strengthening our hair and forget that we need to balance that strength with moisture. Too much protein and not enough moisture will lead to breakage.
6. Underestimating the potency of natural herbs for hair care.
We all love the idea of using natural ingredients in our hair but we must remember that even natural herbs and oils can cause damage if used incorrectly.
5. Not using hair-friendly scrunchies and head bands.
Ever wondered why some hair ties are cheaper than other? Quality and hair friendliness are two reasons. Any hair accessory with metal parts or elastic will only do harm to your delicate strands.
4. Rough Stylist.
How many of us have gone to a stylist who treated our hair like it was steel wool instead of silk? Rough combing, botched chemical services, and detangling from roots to ends can quickly cause a major setback.
3. Skipping hair moisturizer.
I get it. You don’t want to moisturize daily because it will weight your hair down. But consider the consequence of skipping the daily moisturizer – dry, brittle hair that’s prone to breakage. Using a daily moisturizer is essential for everyone. Just use a small amount of a light moisturizer daily to prevent weighting your hair down.
2. Too much heat.
Whether your hair is relaxed or relaxer-free, we occasionally apply heat via blow dryers and flat irons to straighten our hair. High temperatures, not enough heat protectant and frequent use of direct heat will lead to major heat damage.
1. Stress.
Major life changes are overwhelming and the accompanying stress can cause us to neglect our hair. Understandably, the last thing on our minds when dealing with stress is our hair.
What caused your recent hair setback? What factor isn’t on the list that you think should be mentioned?
