Steam Roller Style

My last post was about my fave No Heat Style. As much as I love the braid out, sometimes I want to wear my hair straight. However, flat ironing is not an option I want to go to weekly. Keeping heat and manipulation to a minimum has been one of my keys to growth. Enter…the newest hair gadget in my arsenal! (s/o to my fellow twihards!)

These are the same type of rollers Ms. Kibibi has used in previous posts to create quick styles and waves ( here, here, and a video here). I bought these from Amazon for about $30. This particular set only comes with the jumbo size (~1″ -1.5″). There are other set available that will have various roller sizes and you can also purchase extra rollers if you need them.

So…to operate this, you place water in the base up to the fill line and turn it on. When it starts to steam you place a roller on top of the device and steam diffuses into the roller. The heat from this is gentle and moisturizing.  It also has an ionic function that supposedly helps the curls last longer. I’m not a big believer in that claim and switching on the ionic function makes a lot of annoying noise. I really did not notice a difference when I have used the ionic function and when I did not. So…no ions for me.

I washed and conditioned per usual. Then I let my hair air-dry and ran a cool dryer through the portions that were not dry by the time I was ready to use the rollers.  I sectioned my hair into five equal sections vertically and rolled my hair on the rollers. You can adjust the size of your curl by rolling it more tightly or more loosely. To achieve the style pictured I rolled more tightly. I made sure that my ends were as straight as possible as the hair went onto the roller. (I may use some end papers next time, some of my ends were not as straight as I would have liked) And…voila!

This low heat style works well and keeps manipulation down.  The style is very versatile in that you can go from tight to loose curls or waves. For maintenance I pin curl at night and it holds up well.

What are some other no/low heat styles you love?
