How Much Shedding is Normal?

Shedded hair after 2 weeks

Shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. Everyone sheds between 50 to 100 strands per day. Shedded hair is distinguished by a strand with a white build on the end. The length of the hair can vary depending on where it has shed from. Therefore, not all short pieces of hair are broken pieces, some can be shedded.

Here are some pictures of how much hair I lost after going two weeks without washing or thoroughly detangling my hair. I did lightly detangle a few times when I wore my hair straight and under a hat, like in this picture here. But for the most part, I did not detangle my roots.

This is a normal amount of shedding for me. It may look like a lot, but consider that the strands are long, so when balled together it looks voluminous. Why should you care about the amount of shedding you have? Well your hair can tell you about your overall health. Sometimes excessive shedding can be due to hormonal changes or an allergic reaction.

There are some treatments for excessive shedding including garlic-based products or using real garlic on your scalp.
