I recently stopped nursing my baby boy who is now 16 months old and to my dismay, my hair went on a shedding frenzy. Initially I started panicking, but I got a grip of myself and began my research. I soon found out that Excessive shedding was common amongst women postpartum.
Here’s the deal during pregnancy our hormonal changes causes our hair if in the resting phase to move into the growth phase… yadi yadi… thus leaving us more susceptible to shedding postpartum when our hormone level changes. I wont get into this right now, maybe another blog.
Anyways shedding postpartum happens sooner for most women but I guess I am experiencing it now due to me no longer breastfeeding and taking prenatal vitamins.
So, here’s what I’ve decided to do for the next few months. I am going to get on board with Ms.Kibibi’s hair challenge. I know she is a few weeks into her challenge but hey, it’s never too late, right?
For the next 4 months…
I’m going to focus on lose Bunning and two strand twisting my hair as my protective style. Because I live in the northwest and my daughter doesn’t get to see other kids that looks like her, I don’t use weaves or wigs as an option, just so that our hair can always resemble each other. Plus, wigs and weaves are not the most economical for me these days..
· I’m going to Deep Condition biweekly
· Hair massages with castor oil
· Biweekly tea rinse
· Moisturize and seal every other day or as needed
· Finally, I am going to continue taking my prenatal vitamins
I am hoping that these steps help me preserve my length, and control the shedding so that I can also gain a few inches of growth. If you have ever experienced shedding postpartum, share your experience with me… I’d love to hear from you.
FYI I’m am also on a weight loss journey which will also be beneficial to my hair journey.
