The First Step to Longer Hair

Today I want to talk to you a little bit about achieving your hair goals. So, what is the first step to achieving your hair length and health goals? Well, you have to set a concrete, measurable goal with a clearly defined timeframe.

I know when some women look at my hair journey they think “wow, all those years to achieve waist length hair? that’s a long time.”

True, my journey to full waist length took me almost 7 years. I started with chin length hair, suffered several setbacks, cut numerous inches to remove the “v” shape and ultimately achieve full waist length. But guess what? Those 7 years would have passed regardless.

Granted, a 7 year goal is overwhelming so I suggest that you start with a shorter timeframe. In my book, The 5 Hair Archetypes, I talk about setting both short term and long term goals. The short term goal should have a 21 days deadline.

Why 21 days? Because research has shown that new habits will “stick” if you consistently follow the routine for 21 consecutive days. As it relates to hair care, you can set a short term goal of moisturizing daily and after 21 days of consistent practice, you will have a new healthy hair habit (and less breakage to boot!). Instead of viewing goals in terms of years, take it 21 days at a time. This manageable time frame will help to keep you motivated and on track for your long term goals (ex. Waist length).

Examples of other short term goals include: deep conditioning weekly, protecting hair at night, and reducing direct heat usage.

What are your short terms goals?
