This summer I started a new exercise regimen, and, determined not to let my hair stand between me and
fitness, a solution to heat styling had to be born. Over the summers, I normally try to wear my hair with
its “natural” wave since it’s better than sitting under a dryer, but I have never found a product that will
add moisture and retain curl for longer than one or two days without having to wash it out or without
making it crunchy. But this summer, I decided to nix heat styling altogether since I’ll be outside
sweating daily. Also: no relaxer.
I added the product line Mixed Chicks into my regimen. After shampooing and conditioning in
the shower, I used the leave-in conditioner and the serum. While my hair is still pretty wet, I section it
and apply the products liberally to each section, scrunching as I go. It does a great job of maintaining the
curl for the rest of the day, even if it’s humid. The trick is to be generous with the product, which is hard
for a cheapo like myself who spent about $30 on them combined. It minimizes frizz, and the hair is still
soft.
The drawback is that since my hair is relaxed, what little wave I still have flattens out gradually
the day after I wash it, and it turns into this weird fluffy texture that looks like I just came from a theme
park. It does this even if I sleep with my hair braided. There’s no way around consistently washing my
hair with this product because even if I wet the hair, the curl won’t spring back unless I shampoo.
I continued using this product over the summer, but it doesn’t end my quest. I love the way it
looks the day I use it, but I have to get creative with the styling for work (French braids, French twists,
buns) for a few days in between washes. For someone with that naturally perfect curly texture, this
would be good product to try.
