Curly Style Recap

In my post about the various hair styles I wore while in Jamaica, I included a picture of this formal curly style. Here are some more pictures and a brief recap of how I achieve the style and maintained it all day long.

It was one week between my relaxer and the wedding I attended. So that was 7 days of hot, sometimes humid, one day rainy conditions that my hair dealt with.  Dirty hair is not ideal to work with when trying to create a curly style, but I was prepared with my steam rollers. Here’s the kicker: the curls lasted without any hairspray, gel, or mousse. How is that possible in Jamaica’s high temperatures? Well this is how I did it.

Hair Fascinator
To create this style, I used large steam rollers. I first parted my hair and started on the left side (where the hair fascinator would go). I wrapped the hair onto the roller starting about 4″ from the ends, rather than rolling it from ends to the roots. The former creates curls along the entire bottom of the hair instead of just the ends.
When I got to the section that would frame my face, I used the same rolling technique but rolled away from my face. If you’re right handed (like me), then you naturally tend to roll clockwise. Since I parted my hair to the right, in order for the hair to flow away from my face, I had to roll counter clockwise. I let the rollers set for about 20 minutes while I sat in front of the fan. Then I removed the rollers and carefully pin-curled the curls around my head. This is the key to having long-lasting curls.
After doing my makeup and getting dressed, I removed the pin curls to reveal the style pictured. I didn’t even have to do any additional styling. The curls naturally elongated themselves throughout the evening but still remained curly.

Me and hubby

The day of the wedding felt like the hottest day of my entire trip. Perhaps it was because of the floor length formal gown I wore, complete with a few layers of tulle under the mermaid skirt. In any event, here’s a fun picture of me fanning myself at the reception.

I plan to do a video tutorial the next time I create this style. Actually, I planned to do one while in Jamaica, but we got home at 3am Saturday morning, and I was way too exhausted to record or even take pictures. Frankly, it took discipline to even do the steam rollers and that was because I knew it was the only way to get the style I wanted.
